Executive Summary

Key Findings at a Glance

  • Exness has the fastest median execution at 31ms with a 99.8% fill rate.
  • Average median latency across all 25 brokers is 59ms. 4 brokers deliver sub-40ms median execution.
  • cTrader is the fastest platform: 46ms average median vs 60ms (MT5) and 66ms (MT4).
  • Average negative slippage rate is 25.1% of orders. The best broker limits negative slippage to under 17% of fills.
  • Average fill rate across all brokers is 99.4%. Every broker in our test achieved at least a 98% fill rate.

Why Execution Speed Matters

Spreads are visible. Commissions are disclosed. But execution quality — the speed at which your order fills, the price you actually receive versus the price you requested — is the hidden variable that most traders never measure.

Our Spread Study 2026 measured what brokers charge. This study measures what they deliver. A broker can advertise 0.0 pip spreads, but if execution latency introduces 0.5 pips of negative slippage on 25% of orders, the effective cost is far higher than the headline number.

For a trader executing 20 standard lots per month, the difference between the best and worst execution quality in our test translates to approximately $40-120 per month in slippage costs alone — a figure comparable to or exceeding the total commission bill on a Raw account.

Methodology

We submitted 500 market orders per broker (12,500 total) across 25 EU-regulated brokers over 10 consecutive trading days (27 May - 7 June 2026). Every order was a 0.01 lot EUR/USD market order placed through each broker's API or platform interface.

What We Measured

  • Click-to-fill latency: The time (in milliseconds) between order submission and fill confirmation. Measured via API timestamps cross-referenced with client-side timestamps.
  • Slippage distribution: Whether the fill price was better than requested (positive), equal (zero), or worse (negative). Expressed as a percentage of all fills.
  • Fill rate: The percentage of orders that received a fill (vs rejected or timed out).
  • Requote rate: The percentage of orders that received a requote before filling.

Sessions Covered

London Session

08:00 - 16:00 GMT

Peak EUR/USD liquidity. 250 orders per broker.

New York Session

13:00 - 21:00 GMT

High volume with overlap. 250 orders per broker.

Controls & Limitations

  • All orders were placed from the same VPS (Equinix LD4, London) to eliminate client-side network variability.
  • Only EUR/USD was tested. Results may differ for less liquid pairs.
  • Order size was 0.01 lots. Larger orders will experience higher latency and more slippage due to liquidity depth consumption.
  • The Asian session was excluded because EUR/USD liquidity is significantly reduced, introducing noise that obscures infrastructure-level performance differences.
  • Orders placed during scheduled high-impact news events (NFP, ECB, FOMC) were excluded from median calculations but included in P95.

Execution Speed by Platform

For brokers offering multiple platforms, we tested each platform separately. The results show a consistent pattern: cTrader is fastest, followed by TradingView and MT5, with MT4 trailing.

Key Insight: Platform Matters Less Than Broker

The difference between platforms at the same broker is typically 5-15ms. The difference between the fastest and slowest broker on the same platform exceeds 50ms. Choose your broker first for execution quality, then pick the fastest platform they offer.

Execution Speed by Trading Session

London session execution is consistently faster than New York, reflecting higher EUR/USD liquidity depth during European trading hours. The gap widens at the P95 level, where New York sessions show more variance in fill times.

Key Findings

1

The 40ms Threshold

4 of 25 brokers deliver sub-40ms median execution on EUR/USD. These brokers all share common infrastructure traits: Equinix data centres (LD4 London, NY4/NY5 New York, TY3 Tokyo), direct connections to Tier-1 liquidity providers, and STP/ECN execution models. For scalpers and algorithmic traders, this 40ms threshold is the minimum standard. Above it, slippage frequency increases measurably.

2

Slippage Is Not Random

Brokers with the fastest execution also have the most favourable slippage distributions. The top 5 brokers by execution speed show positive slippage on over 10% of orders, compared to under 5% for the slowest 5 brokers. This is not coincidental: faster execution means the price is less likely to move against the trader between order submission and fill.

3

cTrader's Consistent Speed Advantage

Across every broker that supports it, cTrader delivered the lowest median latency. The average advantage over MT5 is 14ms and over MT4 is 20ms. cTrader's FIX-based protocol and modern architecture reduce the overhead of the legacy MetaTrader bridge layer. For traders whose strategy depends on execution speed, cTrader is the clear choice where available.

4

Requotes Are Concentrated

20 brokers in our test showed requote rates above 2%. All of them use a market-maker or hybrid execution model. Pure STP/ECN brokers show requote rates of 0-0.5% because orders are filled at the best available market price without dealer intervention. If you encounter frequent requotes, it is a strong signal that orders are passing through a dealing desk.

5

The Real Cost of Slow Execution

Combining negative slippage frequency and magnitude, the worst-execution broker in our test adds an implicit cost of approximately $2.48 per standard lot in slippage alone. Over 20 lots per month, that is $595 per year in hidden costs. Combined with the cost differences from our spread study, execution quality can account for 30-40% of total trading costs.

Practical Implications by Trader Type

Scalpers & Day Traders

  • Target sub-40ms median latency brokers (top 4 in our test)
  • Use cTrader where available for the fastest fills
  • Trade during London session for best execution conditions
  • Prioritise brokers with <20% negative slippage rate
  • Avoid any broker with requote rate >1%

Swing & Position Traders

  • Execution speed is secondary to spread cost and swap rates
  • Any broker with >99% fill rate is adequate
  • Focus on slippage distribution over raw latency
  • Platform choice matters less — pick for features
  • Session timing is irrelevant for multi-day holds
