About AMF
The Autorite des Marches Financiers (AMF) is France's financial markets regulator, responsible for protecting investors and ensuring the orderly operation of French financial markets. The AMF has taken a particularly aggressive stance on retail forex and CFD trading.
France has some of the strictest advertising rules for leveraged trading products in Europe. The AMF has banned advertising of CFDs and forex to retail investors through certain channels and requires enhanced risk warnings. This consumer-protection-first approach makes AMF oversight a strong trust signal.
The AMF maintains an extensive blacklist of unauthorized brokers and websites, which is updated regularly and publicly available. This blacklist is one of the most comprehensive in Europe and is a valuable resource for French traders checking whether a broker is legitimate.
Investor protection in France is notably higher than the EU minimum. The FGDR covers securities up to EUR 70,000 (compared to the standard EUR 20,000 in many EU states) and cash deposits up to EUR 100,000. This makes French-regulated brokers among the safest in Europe from a compensation perspective.
Most forex brokers serving French clients do so through CySEC passporting rather than holding a direct AMF license. However, these brokers must still comply with AMF's additional national requirements regarding advertising, disclosure, and client communication in French.
