Forex Trading Sessions Explained

The forex market operates across four major sessions that follow the sun around the globe. Each session has its own characteristics in terms of liquidity, volatility, and which currency pairs are most active.

Sydney Session (22:00 - 07:00 UTC)

The first session to open each week. Lower liquidity and tighter ranges, most active for AUD and NZD pairs.

Tokyo Session (00:00 - 09:00 UTC)

The Asian session brings increased activity for JPY pairs. Often sets the tone for the European session.

London Session (08:00 - 17:00 UTC)

The highest-volume session, accounting for roughly 35% of daily forex turnover. EUR, GBP, and CHF pairs are most active.

New York Session (13:00 - 22:00 UTC)

Overlaps with London for several hours, creating the most liquid and volatile period of the trading day. USD pairs dominate.

Session Overlap -- Best Time to Trade

The London-New York overlap (13:00 - 17:00 UTC) is widely considered the best time to trade forex. Liquidity is at its peak, spreads are tightest, and the most significant price moves often occur during this window.

For European traders, this overlap conveniently falls within afternoon hours, making it accessible for both full-time and part-time traders based in the EU.
