Understanding Forex Spreads

The spread is the difference between the bid (sell) price and the ask (buy) price of a currency pair. It represents the primary trading cost for forex traders and is measured in pips (points in percentage).

For example, if EUR/USD has a bid price of 1.0850 and an ask price of 1.0851, the spread is 1 pip. On a standard lot (100,000 units), this 1-pip spread costs approximately $10 per trade.

Lower spreads directly translate to lower trading costs, which is why spread comparison is one of the most important factors when choosing a forex broker, especially for active traders and scalpers.

Spread vs Commission

Spread-Only Accounts

All costs are built into the spread (e.g. 1.0-1.6 pips on EUR/USD). Simple pricing with no separate commission charges.

Raw Spread + Commission

Ultra-tight spreads from 0.0 pips plus a fixed commission per lot (typically $3-$7 round-turn). Often cheaper overall for active traders.
