Start from the thing most app round-ups skip: a lot of brokers do not write the app you will end up using. They give you an account and hand you MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader or TradingView — vendor platforms whose iOS and Android builds look and behave the same whichever broker is behind them. Others build their own, and the app becomes a real point of difference. This page splits the field on that line, then puts the numbers that decide the outcome — minimum deposit, spread, commission, retail leverage — next to it. Every figure is read live from our broker database, and no app-store star rating is anywhere in our scoring.

Two Kinds of Trading App, and Why the Difference Matters

The broker built it

A proprietary app is designed around one broker's account. Funding, identity verification, support and the chart usually live in one place, and the broker controls the whole experience, so it can be shaped for a phone rather than inherited from a desktop build. The cost is portability: what you learn does not transfer, and if you change broker you start again.

A vendor built it

MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView are platforms brokers license rather than write. Their mobile apps are the same app at every broker offering them, which is the point: the layout, the order ticket and the indicator set travel with you, and an automated strategy written for one keeps running if you move the account. The cost is that no broker can fix a platform it does not own.

Six things worth testing on a demo before you fund anything. We state these generically because we do not hold per-broker app behaviour as measured data — publishing an invented feature list would be worse than sending you to check it yourself.

Execution over a mobile connection

A phone on 4G or 5G adds latency a wired desktop does not. What matters is whether the app holds a live price stream rather than polling, how it behaves when the connection drops mid-order, and whether a rejected order tells you why. Test it by placing small orders on a demo during a scheduled data release, when spreads widen and fills are hardest.

Desktop platforms carry the full order book: market, limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing stop, and attached stop-loss and take-profit set at entry. Mobile builds sometimes ship a subset. If you cannot attach a stop at the moment you open the position, you are relying on being able to come back to the app — check this before you fund anything.

Charting you can actually read

Decides the analysis

Indicator counts make good marketing and poor criteria. What decides a mobile chart is whether landscape mode works, whether drawings you place on the phone survive to the desktop session, how many timeframes are one tap away, and whether the crosshair is precise enough to place a level on a small screen.

Some brokers complete funding, document upload and withdrawal requests in the app; others bounce you into a browser-based client area. The withdrawal path matters more than the deposit path — a broker that makes depositing a two-tap job and withdrawing a desktop-only errand is telling you something. Biometric login and two-factor

Decides the security

Face or fingerprint unlock is only the convenience layer — it protects the app on a device you already control. The security layer is two-factor authentication on the account itself, a session that times out, and an alert when a new device signs in. Treat biometric unlock as a replacement for typing a password, not as a replacement for 2FA.

Price alerts and margin warnings are only useful if the push notification actually arrives, which depends on the app's background permissions and your phone's battery optimisation as much as on the broker. Set an alert you expect to trigger, then leave the phone alone for an hour and see whether it fires.

Demo Accounts: Install the App Before You Fund It

A demo account is the only way to judge an app honestly. It costs nothing, needs no deposit and, at most brokers, no identity documents either: you register, pick a platform and a virtual balance, and the same mobile app you would use on a live account accepts the demo credentials. Every broker below runs one. What differs between them — the size of the virtual balance, and whether the account expires after a period of inactivity — is set at signup and is not something we hold as structured data, so we do not quote figures for it here.

What a demo will not show you

Demo execution is simulated. Fills tend to be cleaner than live, slippage during a data release is softer, and a requote that would cost you on a funded account may never appear. The behaviour a demo does reproduce faithfully is the interface: the order ticket, the charting, the alerting, the depth of the settings menu. Judge the app on those, and judge execution on the broker's cost and regulatory record instead.

How We Test, and What We Deliberately Ignore

We test brokers, not app icons. Our scoring covers regulation, fees, platforms, execution, instruments, support and education, and every broker figure on this page — spread, commission, minimum deposit, retail leverage, platform list, funding methods, compensation scheme — is read at render time from that dataset rather than retyped into the page, so it cannot drift away from the broker review it came from.

App-store ratings are not an input

A four-and-a-half-star listing measures software satisfaction among people who were prompted to rate it, often at the moment a trade went well. It carries no information about the cost of a round turn, the quality of a fill, which entity holds the money or what happens to that money if the firm fails. We do not collect store ratings and none of them move any number on this site.

What we will not claim

We do not record per-broker app internals — biometric implementation, push-notification reliability, the exact order types exposed on mobile — as structured data, so this page does not assert them. Where a fact is not in our database, the page tells you to check it on the demo rather than filling the gap with something plausible.

There is no single answer, because most brokers do not build the app you will use. Pepperstone, for example, ships no proprietary platform at all — its clients trade through the MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView mobile apps, each built by a third-party vendor and identical whichever broker you route it through. So the honest question is two questions: which mobile platform suits you, and which broker gives you access to it on terms you can live with. Our comparison below splits every broker into the app it built and the third-party apps it supports, so you can see which decision you are actually making.

Is a broker's own app better than MetaTrader or cTrader on mobile?

They solve different problems. A proprietary app is built around one broker's account, so funding, verification and support usually sit in the same place as the chart, and the interface can be designed rather than inherited. MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and TradingView are vendor platforms: the layout, the indicator set and the order ticket are the same at every broker that offers them, which means the skills transfer if you change broker and any automated strategy you have written keeps working. If you already know one of those platforms, availability of it is a harder requirement than app design.

Do app-store ratings tell you which forex app is best?

No, and we do not use them as a scoring input. An app-store rating measures the app as software — whether it crashes, whether the layout is liked, how recently it was updated — and is skewed by review prompts shown at the moment a trade goes well. It says nothing about spreads, commission, execution quality, which legal entity holds your money, or which compensation scheme covers it if the broker fails. We score brokers on regulation, fees, platforms, execution, instruments, support and education, and every figure on this page is read from that dataset rather than from a store listing.

Can I open a demo account from a phone before depositing?

Yes. Every broker listed on this page runs a free demo funded with virtual money, and the mobile platforms they support all accept demo credentials, so you can install the app and trade a simulated account before any money or identity documents change hands. Demo terms — the virtual balance, and whether the account expires after a period of inactivity — differ by broker and are not something we hold as structured data, so check them at signup. Use the demo to test the order ticket, the alerts and the charting, and treat its fills as optimistic: simulated execution does not reproduce slippage or a requote in a fast market.

What should I check in a trading app before I fund it?

Four things, in this order. Which legal entity the account agreement names, and whether that entity is authorised in your country — the app is a window onto an account, and the entity behind it determines your protections. What the total cost of a trade is: the spread plus any per-lot commission, not the spread alone. Whether the withdrawal path works from the app or forces you to a desktop browser. And whether you can attach a stop-loss at the moment you open a position on mobile, rather than only afterwards.
